This was the first serious digital painting I did. I was working at a company that made tax forms. I sat in a cubicle all day, and wished I did something else.
I came up with the idea for this during a particularly boring staff meeting. I had been listening to the Everlast/Santana song "Put Your Lights On," and was hung up on the lines:
"'Cause there's a monster living under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There's an angel, with a hand on my head
She say I've got nothing to fear
There's a darkness deep in my soul
I still got a purpose to serve "
I drew out a sketch on a yellow legal pad, and for the next year I would stay an hour after work on Fridays to paint this picture in Photoshop.
When I finished it, I decided I would have a better time being a painter than a tax-form maker. I haven't seen the inside of a cubicle since.
The idea was that a killer for hire had just gotten his latest target, but was really struggling with his life choices. Here, he's having a drink and trying to remember the normal life he had a long time ago . . .
This is really interesting, and very complex. I really like the perspective/angle we see the man from; the foreshortening is very nice. The complexity of the piece just keeps making me look at it.
Did you use some stock photos for parts of this or something, or is the entire thing done completely from scratch? Some of the individual pieces of the painting have a rather realistic look, which contrast with the more painted feeling of other parts. I actually really do like this effect; it gives an almost disjointed feeling, which really adds to the entire effect of the piece.
There's a couple of things that were stock images or personal pictures (that beer bottle in the right foreground, a couple of the polaroids on the floor, and the guy with the target) that I painted over. Everything else is painted. (Mouse painted! It was loooong before I got a tablet!)
This picture makes think of the time before you are completely and awke that all theses things go though you head and the shadows on the wall can look like objects or even people. So you rush to wake up or rush to go to sleep.
A great piece of art capturing the artist's interpretation of great lyrics. Is it good, is it evil? Only you can decide. So much detail, you look once, you think you've seen it all, take another look and a form not previously seen catches your eye .
I like this one, there is so much detail and I always appreciate detail. The whole mess in his room is well done. He has a sniper rifle and some envelope with pictures in it, possibly a target if hes a shooter? Also seems like he is just about to kill himself. You can almost feel his pain through the image.
The atmosphere is great overall, I like the devil character and his long fingers
Don't have much to complain on except for the angels head looks a bit misshaped. Good work overall, keep it up
This piece is excellent. So much going on here. I don't usually like surrealism but this really digs into the human psyche. I'm looking at it and thinking the bad he has done is outweighing the good. I'd definitely say you've made a good choice to do painting instead of tax forms. Keep the illustrations coming. Remember what made this one great.
This will always be my favorite because I think you are the 'guy' looking over your life and deciding which way to run with it. He's tired of the battle and examing the past to determine the future. Just like you were. Thank goodness for the art world that you ran away from the gray-cubicle! Actually you weren't even in a cubicle -- you were in an entire world of gray and funky yellow and we both got out - yeah!
Nice work, I like the strugle that he's having, and all those small details, like the gun next to his hand, the way he looks tired, the fact the bad things seem to have an advantage on this, and the way the angel seems to confort him
And cheers for you not being in a cubicle now
